According to Portuguese newspaper Record, Liverpool have sent scouts to watch Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho.
Liverpool are in fine form right now, but manager Brendan Rodgers knows that he has a big challenge on his hands this summer as he looks to replace inspirational skipper Steven Gerrard.
Anfield legend Gerrard will leave Merseyside in the summer in order to join MLS side Los Angeles Galaxy – and present Rodgers with his biggest transfer market challenge since he tried to replace Luis Suarez with Mario Balotelli last summer, in a move which has, so far, failed.
Even though there are still some months to go until the transfer window re-opens again, it seems that Rodgers is trying to identify possible replacements for Gerrard already by scouting Sporting star Carvalho, according to Record.
Carvalho, 22, has emerged as one of the world’s brightest young prospects in the last 12 months, and has subsequently been linked with moves to Arsenal and Manchester United in the last year.
Yet now, Record believe that Rodgers sent scouts to Portugal last month to watch the Angolan-born defensive midfielder in action ahead of a possible summer move.
With 11 caps for Portugal – including two appearances for them at last summer’s World Cup – Carvalho has a burgeoning reputation, and whilst he may not score as many goals as Gerrard, he does possess great strength and positional awareness in defensive midfield.
