The Real Madrid ace would be a useful addition to the Liverpool squad.
A report emanating from Spain today suggests that the Reds have a verbal agreement in place with Real Madrid to sign Mateo Kovacic, if they end up losing Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona, according to Spanish media outlet Diario Gol.
The 23-year-old midfielder is versatile in every sense of the word, and is equally competent when deployed in the deep-lying midfield role, a more orthodox central midfield position, or in a more advanced role, slotted in behind the main striker.
The Croatian moved to the Bernabeu from Inter Milan in the summer of 2015, but has struggled to nail down a regular place in Zinedine Zidane’s side, what with the fierce competition for places in the Spanish capital.
And Diario Gol claim that the opportunity of more regular first-team action at Anfield could convince him into joining Liverpool. They suggest that the Merseyside outfit already have a verbal agreement in place with Real to sign Kovacic, and although he would not be a direct replacement for Coutinho, should the Brazilian leave, he would undoubtedly bring much quality to Jürgen Klopp’s side.
And with just nine days until the transfer window slams shut, this will certainly be one to keep an eye on.
