Matthijs de Ligt to Liverpool is a transfer rumour that’s been doing the rounds a little bit this summer.
It isn’t exactly at the level of Darwin Nunez, who was being linked with a move to Liverpool every few hours.
But TuttoMercatoWeb in Italy did report last week that the Reds were ‘dreaming’ of signing the Juventus defender and pairing him with Virgil van Dijk in the heart of Jurgen Klopp’s defence.
Chelsea are also in the running for De Ligt and Sky Italia claimed this past weekend that the Blues could offer Timo Werner in a potential player-plus-cash arrangement.
However, Corriere Dello Sport have claimed that Juventus do not want any swap deal for the Liverpool target and any club interested must pay the entire release clause which, at the moment, is standing at £107 million.
Matthijs de Ligt to Liverpool
On the surface this doesn’t look like it makes a great deal of sense.
After all, Liverpool came relatively close to winning a quadruple last season and their stellar defence played a big role in that.
Klopp has Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez in his ranks.
So why would Matthijs de Ligt to Liverpool be a reasonable rumour?
Well, perhaps becuase Klopp is always looking to the future and with Van Dijk and Matip the wrong side of 30, and Gomez linked away, there is a scope for the Reds to sign a centre-back.
But not this summer and definitely not for £107 million, given that the Anfield outfit have already broken their transfer record once this summer with the addition of Nunez.
