According to The Mirror, Liverpool have opened talks with Borussia Dortmund about a summer deal for Borussia Dortmund playmaker Mario Gotze.
The Reds have seen their Premier League title bid fall apart in recent weeks, as their 2-0 home win over Tottenham Hotspur last weekend was their first league victory in 2017.
A push for Champions League football remains on the cards for Liverpool, but it’s clear that manager Jurgen Klopp needs to dip into the transfer market this summer in order to strengthen his squad.
Now, The Mirror report that Liverpool have already held talks with Borussia Dortmund about a possible summer deal for playmaker Mario Gotze – a long term favourite of manager Klopp.
Gotze, 24, worked with Klopp at Borussia Dortmund having come up through the ranks with the club, scoring 31 goals in 116 games for the club before leaving for fierce rivals Bayern Munich in the summer of 2013.
Whilst he hit 30 goals in his first two seasons for Bayern, he notched just six goals last term, and was sold back to Dortmund in a bid to reinvigorate his flagging career.

However, Gotze has started just nine league games this season, scoring once in a disappointing return to Signal Iduna Park, meaning speculation is already surrounding his future.
The Mirror believe that Liverpool boss Klopp is now keen to reunite with Gotze at Anfield, and talks have started over a deal that could cost £20million, with Dortmund keen to get their money back.
Gotze not only has experience of playing in Klopp’s high-tempo system, but has also featured in a false nine role, meaning he could offer competition for Roberto Firmino in the Liverpool attack, as well as being able to play from the left or as an attacking midfield player.
