Liverpool have been handed a potential boost in their hopes to sign Lyon talent Rayan Cherki, with a planned meeting over a new contract between the player and club failing to take place this week.
According to Foot Mercato, the 18-year-old attacker and representatives of Lyon were due to meet this Monday to discuss the possibility of signing a new contract, with Cherki’s deal with the French giants set to expire next summer, however, no such event occurred, leaving the youngster’s future at the club once again up in the air.
Liverpool have been linked with a move for Cherki in recent weeks with Jurgen Klopp seemingly eager to once again bring one of Europe’s most exciting talents to Europe following this summer’s capture of Fabio Carvalho from Fulham, with the German manager also signing Harvey Elliott from the Cottagers in 2020.
Whilst the former Fulham duo are exciting talents, Cherku could arguably be even better than Carvalho and Elliott, with the French youth international Lyon’s youngest ever goalscorer as well as the youngest player to ever feature in a UEFA Champions League semi-final, two accolades the attacker claimed when he was just 16-years-old.
Two years later, and Cherki has developed well in Lyon’s senior team, with the French giants now keen to sign the attacker down to a new contract with the teenager’s deal set to expire in 2023, and this latest update could alert Liverpool to a potential transfer in the coming months.
A player who Kylian Mbappe publically praised on Twitter for his outrageous accomplishments at such a young age, Cherki could quickly become one of the most in-demand players in Europe if the youngster fails to sign a new contract with Lyon, and for Liverpool, they will have to move quickly to land the Ligue 1 superstar.
Failing to sign a new Lyon contract should push Liverpool to land Cherki

With over 60 first-team appearances for Lyon before he’s even turned 19, the hype around Cherki is more than deserved, and if the French club fail to sign the forward down to a new contract, Liverpool have to ensure they’re at the front of the queue for the teenager.
After all, the Reds have been incredible in recent years at snapping up talented youngsters ahead of rivals clubs, and Liverpool should be looking to do the same for Cherki if the teenager fails to renew his deal with Lyon, which could now be a possibility.
