Liverpool defender Joel Matip is not injured ahead of their game against Tottenham Hotspur, the Athletic report.

Matip was not in Liverpool’s squad yesterday, which led to concerns that the Cameroonian centre-back could be suffering with injury again.

However, it seems that Matip was simply being rested by Jurgen Klopp.

Matip has struggled with the rigours of playing three games in a week before, and Klopp apparently didn’t want to risk him in their FA Cup clash against Manchester United.

That decision may have backfired, as Liverpool were dumped out of the competition yesterday, with Rhys William struggling in defence.

However, Klopp will argue that Liverpool have bigger priorities this term than the FA Cup.

Matip’s availability on Thursday evening should increase the Reds’ chances of picking up the three points, as his partnership with Fabinho at the back has looked solid, when the pair have played together.

Liverpool are in desperate need of a return to winning ways, and their clash with Tottenham Hotspur in four days’ time now looks vital for both teams.

If Spurs can win then they will be thrusted right into the title fight, while a Liverpool victory would restore some confidence that they could yet defend their Premier League crown.
