Liverpool fear that Joel Matip could be out for weeks after he picked up an injury at the weekend, according to Goal.com.

Liverpool are awaiting to hear news on Matip’s injury after his scan, but there are concerns that his latest issue could be a fairly problematic one.

Matip had to be taken off in Liverpool’s last match against West Bromwich Albion, after picking a problem in his adductor.

If Matip, who was hailed as ‘world-class’ by Jurgen Klopp (official website), is ruled out for weeks, as is the concern at Liverpool, then it would be a major blow to the Merseyside outfit.

Liverpool had been relying on Matip staying fit, as he is their most senior centre-back option available.

With Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk out, Matip had looked likely to start alongside Fabinho at every possible opportunity for the Reds.

However, the expectation is that Nathaniel Phillips or Rhys Williams could now be given a run of games.

Both Phillips and Williams have stepped in admirably so far, but they are inexperienced and with so many games coming up opposition teams are likely to target them as they look to exploit any weakness in Liverpool’s game plan.
