Liverpool failed with a late bid for Braga defender David Carmo after the club’s president decided against selling the star centre-back, as reported by O Jogo.
Ozan Kabak and Ben Davies are expected to put pen to paper with the Premier League champions this afternoon after Jurgen Klopp’s side struck deals with Schalke and Preston North End respectively for the centre-backs.
But it seems Marseille’s Croatia international Duje Caleta-Car isn’t the only man who missed out on a deadline day move to Merseyside.
Reports in Portugal are claiming Liverpool also expressed their interest in Carmo this morning.
However, after giving his word to Braga coach Carlos Carvalhal, president Antonio Salvador made it clear the 21-year-old former Benfica youngster wouldn’t be going anywhere.
Carmo only recently signed a new contract until 2025, complete with a £35 million release clause.
Braga would have had no choice but to sell if Liverpool had shown a willigness to trigger that clause. So we can only assume the 2019 Champions League winners tried to get the Portugal U20 international at a reduced fee.
Carmo was also linked with a move to Leicester City after catching Brendan Rodgers’ eye during a Europa League group-stage clash in the first half of 2020/21.
“He’s a young player with an excellent profile. He’s tall, strong and aggressive. Yes, he has all the conditions to play in the Premier League,” Rodgers said, as reported by O Jogo.
