According to the Daily Mail, Liverpool are considering a move for Derby and Scotland goalkeeper David Marshall.

What’s the story?

Well, this is a strange one.

The Reds are said to be admirers of the 36-year-old, who helped Scotland qualify for EURO 2020 with his penalty shootout heroics.

Liverpool’s very own Andy Robertson showed how highly he rated Marshall after that shootout, claiming that he’d always back his fellow Scot in that situation.

Sky Sports quote him as saying: “When you get to penalties, you always back Marshy and it’s just whether the lads can hold their nerve, and they managed to do it.”

Marshall – who has made 53 Premier League appearances – is currently playing under Wayne Rooney at Derby in the Championship.

The Daily Mail believe Liverpool want another shot-stopper to compete with Alisson Becker, which doesn’t really make sense to us.

Nevertheless, if it’s true, then Jürgen Klopp is clearly keen to add some experience to his goalkeeping department.

Why would Liverpool sign David Marshall?

From our point of view, we have no idea why Liverpool would want to sign the 46-cap Scotland international.

Klopp already has Alisson as his outright No.1, as well as Adrian to provide competition for the Brazilian.

Perhaps more significantly, signing Marshall would potentially block the promising Caoimhin Kelleher’s route to first-team action.

The Irishman impressed last season, and was handed four starts by Klopp – two in the Premier League and two in the Champions League.

With such a promising talent behind two experienced first-teamers, what is the point in signing Marshall?

The only possible explanation we can think of is that Marshall would contribute to Liverpool’s homegrown quota, whereas Adrian does not.

Nevertheless, it’s a very strange nugget of information from the Daily Mail, to say the least.
