According to TuttoMercatoWeb, Liverpool are dreaming of pairing Matthijs De Ligt and Virgil van Dijk together at Anfield.
The Reds have been linked with a move for the Juventus defender for a number of weeks now, and according to this report, they really want to unite the Dutch centre-back partnership at Anfield.
De Ligt has long been touted as one of the best young defenders on the planet, all the way back to his time at Ajax, and now, he could be on his way to the Premier League with Liverpool.
Understandably, Juventus want to keep the so-called ‘generational’ defender at the club, with The Old Lady reportedly keen to tie him down to a new contract that will run to 2026, but, right now, there is an impasse over a release clause as De Ligt would like to be free to leave for around €80m (£70m).
£70m for a defender of De Ligt’s quality isn’t much these days, so it’s understandable why Juve aren’t too keen to agree to those terms. After all, the Turin outfit need to rebuild their defence after the departure of club legend Giorgio Chiellini.
This probably won’t be one for this summer for Liverpool. It has been reported that Calvin Ramsay would be their final signing of the summer, but with De Ligt’s current deal up in 2024, a bargain transfer could be there for the taking this time next year.
Liverpool want De Ligt and Van Dijk in their defence, and this could be a move to keep an eye on next summer, especially if Joe Gomez and/or Joel Matip leave the club.
