According to The Athletic, Liverpool inquired about the possibility of signing Konrad Laimer before making their move for Arthur Melo.

The Reds had been linked with Laimer all week long, and according to this report, the question was asked about whether or not they could sign him before the transfer deadline.

With just one year to run on his RB Leipzig contract, one would imagine that the Bundesliga club would be looking to cash-in on Laimer, but due to the timings of this deal, the German outfit weren’t happy to sell to Liverpool.

Indeed, according to this report, Leipzig didn’t want to lose Laimer with so little time to get a replacement in, and that’s an understandable stance to take.

However, their failure to find a move for the Austrian this summer will now likely see the midfielder depart on a cut-price deal in January or even on a free transfer next summer.

Liverpool could revisit this one in a few months’ time when Laimer is able to agree a pre-contract agreement with any non-domestic team, but with all eyes on Jude Bellingham heading into summer 2023, the Reds may not need to go for another midfielder.

Although, it has to be said that Laimer would’ve been a great fit for Liverpool. He’s a player capable of being utilised in both midfield and as a right-back, and that would make him a great fit for the Jordan Henderson role that often sees the Liverpool skipper drift out to the right to create overloads and aid Trent Alexander-Arnold defensively.

Compared to N’Golo Kante in the past, Laimer’s energy would have been perfect in the heart of Jurgen Klopp’s midfield.

Whether or not Liverpool revisit this move for Laimer remains to be seen, but he’s a player who would be a good fit for this team and clearly a footballer that the Reds have had half an eye on.
