The Senegal international damaged his left knee during Saturday’s Merseyside derby clash against Everton, and there are growing fears in the Liverpool camp that he could miss the remainder of the season.

According to reports from The Times, Liverpool’s medical staff have been unable to make a conclusive diagnosis of the injury.

Although he has not damaged his cruciate ligaments his joint has remained swollen, and an operation has not been ruled out. If he needs a surgery that would bring his season to a close.

The report adds that even if Mane is out for two weeks, he will miss at least three games. He is certain not to feature against Bournemouth on Wednesday, and could also miss out on tricky trips to Stoke City on Saturday and West Bromwich Albion the following week.

Mane’s injury came at a time when Adam Lallana and Jordan Henderson are also missing through thigh and foot injuries. He has arguably been Liverpool’s best player this season, having scored 13 Premier League goals.

Last time, when Liverpool lost Mane when he was on Africa Cup of Nations duty, Klopp’s side stuttered badly in January. His absence is a massive loss for Liverpool, as the Reds do not have a direct replacement for him. His energy, pace and guile will be throughly missed.
