Report: Liverpool cool interest in Monaco’s Thomas Lemar

Liverpool are reportedly cooling their interest in Monaco winger Thomas Lemar.

According to a report from the Liverpool Echo, Liverpool have cooled their interest in a big-money deal for Monaco winger Thomas Lemar this summer.

The Reds sold Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona in a huge deal in January, but will wait until summer to land any sort of replacement having failed to make a move last month.

Monaco star Lemar has been one of the main names linked with Liverpool since Coutinho’s departure, with many believing that the France international will end up making a major move to Anfield over the summer.

However, it’s now believed that Liverpool are looking elsewhere, and are scaling back their interest in snapping up the wide man at the end of the season.

Price tag ploy?

On Wednesday, The Independent reported that Liverpool were Lemar’s first choice ahead of Arsenal, with the Reds allegedly still keeping tabs on him.

Now though, the claims that Liverpool aren’t strongly pursuing a deal may just suggest that Liverpool are using a ploy to tempt Monaco into dropping the price tag this summer.

Liverpool allegedly had a £78million bid for Lemar rejected in 2017, and with Monaco demanding close to £100million, the Reds may be planting the seed to try and drop the price tag.

Liverpool may well be turning their attentions elsewhere, but after pursuing Lemar for so long already, it seems hard to believe that they would just drop their interest – especially if he does prefer a move to Anfield over joining Arsenal.
