Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly failed with moves for Valencia’s Geoffrey Kondogbia.
According to Superdeporte in Spain, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are among the clubs to have failed with moves for Valencia’s Geoffrey Kondogbia, with the La Liga side sticking to his €80million (£71million) release clause.
Kondogbia, 25, emerged one of the top young talents in France with Lens before heading to Sevilla, Monaco and Inter Milan, but his big Italian move turned into a nightmare as he struggled at the San Siro.
The Frenchman went on loan to Valencia last summer and recaptured his best form, playing a key role under Marcelino as he hit four goals and four assists in 31 games last term.
Valencia activated a purchase clause in Kondogbia’s loan deal, but that seemingly hasn’t prevented interest, as Superdeporte – one of the main newspapers in Valencia – report that Liverpool and Tottenham have both failed with moves.
It’s unclear just when Liverpool and Spurs made their moves, especially as Plaza Deportivo recently claimed that Spurs made a move last summer, but as it’s noted that Barcelona failed in January, and interest from the English duo may well have arrived this summer after his buyout clause was activated.
Valencia are adamant that Kondogbia isn’t for sale, and it’s stated that luring him away from the Mestalla would cost a whopping €80million (£71million), as that’s the price in his release clause.
Kondogbia has starred in Spain, and could have been a sensible successor to Mousa Dembele thanks to his ability to drive through midfield, whilst being left-footed would also offer similar balance to Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
It’s unclear where he would have fit into the Liverpool midfield unless Jurgen Klopp wanted to play him with Fabinho and Naby Keita in a formidable trio, but the pair may have to rethink their interest in Kondogbia given the huge cost of a move.
