Well, Luiz Diaz’s proposed transfer to Liverpool during the January window might not be completely dead yet.
David Ornstein of The Athletic wrote on Friday that signing Ibrahima Konate was always supposed to be Liverpool’s only addition for the 2021-22 campaign.
But speculation continues to increase over a big-money acquisition of the Porto attacker, who has 14 goals in all competitions this season.
The Athletic reiterated that the Anfield outfit were not presently planning to sign the 24-year-old forward.
However, a potentially better source has suggested otherwise.
According to Portugal-based outlet A Bola, Liverpool are willing to spend an ‘astronomical fee’ on Diaz this winter.
The report claims that the Merseysiders are prepared to spend £58 million on the player up front, with the remaining £10 million of his release clause coming in various installments.
Authoratitve
Reliable as Ornstein is – and he is an extremely trustworthy journalist – this piece of speculation is very interesting.
It stems from the same country that Diaz is currently plying his trade in and in terms of authority, well it absolutely carries weight.
Nevertheless, much of what is written in the January window ultimately emerges as false, so nobody on the planet will be putting their mortgage on Liverpool getting this transfer completed.
However, it’s certainly worth noting that Jurgen Klopp and Michael Edwards have previous for surprise signings, after dropping £45 million on Diogo Jota in 2020 for instance.
Whether Liverpool do the same with Diaz, time will tell.
