Loris Karius has no long-term future at Liverpool after spending the season out on loan at Union Berlin, according to a report.

The Liverpool Echo report that Karius, who only made four appearances in the Bundesliga this season, will ‘most likely’ return to his homeland on a permanent basis this summer.

That 2018 Champions League final will forever haunt Karius, and whilst he used to produce nervy performances before that Real Madrid defeat, he hasn’t done much since to squash those demons.

Liverpool had no choice but to replace Karius following that Champions League final defeat and they haven’t looked back since with Alisson Becker in between their sticks.

But with Karius entering the final year of his contract on Merseyside, it seems as though he could now be heading back to his homeland on a permanent basis.

Given that Karius has hardly featured for Union Berlin, it would be a surprise if they put the money down for his services.

However, Liverpool shouldn’t really fight over a potential transfer fee given his status at the club and the fact that his deal at Anfield will expire next summer.

Getting away from the Liverpool limelight will suit Karius and it may have been a tough few years for the German, but he still has plenty of years left in his tank to turn his career around.
