Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld is in for an interesting week.

According to The Telegraph, Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy is already planning to hike up Toby Alderweireld’s price tag to £40million this week.
Spurs have known for some time that, after activating a one-year option in Alderweireld’s contract, they’ve been risking losing him.
That’s because a £25million release clause exists in Alderweireld’s deal now, which must be activated by Friday otherwise it no longer stands.
The fee would have to be paid in no more than three instalments and over no more than two years, and so far, no clubs have come forward to pay that release clause.
Now, with the deadline fast approaching, Spurs chairman Levy is reportedly ready to hike up Alderweireld’s asking price to £40million – a £15million increase.
That’s despite Alderweireld being in his 30’s and in the final year of his contract, but Levy won’t be messed around with, so any club would have to pay big money to get him.

It’s a frankly bizarre situation that nobody wants to sign Alderweireld for £25million, and Roma appear to be out of the race after deciding that they can’t afford to sign the Belgian.
Manchester United are eyeing Alderweireld in case they can’t sign Harry Maguire, but it now looks like Alderweireld will be staying with Spurs for another year – and they may yet hold out hope of convincing him to stay, with his other options fading.
