Leicester City have offered a new contract to Nampalys Mendy in an attempt to stop the midfeidler joining Claude Puel’s St Etienne on a free this summer, according to Le10 Sport.

A few months ago, it seemed only a matter of time before a hard-working ‘number six’ once signed to replace N’Golo Kante at the King Power was packing his bags and heading back across the Channel.

The £10 million Mendy played just one minute of Premier League football between August and the end of December.

Since the turn of the year, however, he has forced his way back in the reckoning. So much so that Leicester are now doing all they can to stop this revitalised Frenchman from walking away at the end of the season.

Mendy is due to become a free-agent in August and former Foxes boss Puel would jump at the opportunity to reunite with him at St Etienne.

“(He has a) fantastic ability to recover the ball,” the softly-spoken Frenchman told the Mercury of Mendy in September 2018.

Puel’s loss, however, looks to be Brendan Rodgers’ gain with Le10 Sport claiming that Leicester have offered the £50,000-a-week former Nice enforcer the chance to continue his career in the Midlands.

Speaking to the Mercury a few weeks ago, Rodgers admitted that he had been won over by Mendy’s increasingly influential displays and it should be no surprise now that a new deal is on the table.

“The longer I’ve been here, the more I’ve seen him and the more impressed I’ve been with him,” the Leicester boss said.
