Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy has emerged as a surprise transfer target for Spanish giants Atletico Madrid, with Los Rojiblancos preparing to strengthen their attack to challenge next season, according to The Independent.
According to the report, which also states that Atletico are interested in Arsenal’s star man Alexis Sanchez, Rojiblancos boss Diego Simeone was incredibly impressed with Vardy when the two sides met in the Champions League quarter-finals, and believes that the England international would be a brilliant fit for the club’s style of play.
The 30-year-old forward has scored 15 goals for the Foxes in 45 games this season, but the stats somewhat gloss over what’s been an indifferent campaign for Vardy, as he scored three goals for Leicester in five and a half months at one point – all of which came in one game.
Since Vardy’s drought though, he’s been on a purple patch with nine goals in 14 games for the Foxes, and scored against Simeone’s side in the Champions League quarter-final second leg – resulting in a 1-1 draw on the night.

A lot depends on whether Atletico can have their transfer ban imposed by FIFA overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, but if that happens, it’s very possible that Leicester will be bracing themselves for bids for their best striker.
Atletico recently crashed out of the Champions League semi-finals to their city rivals Real Madrid 4-2 on aggregate, while comfortably sitting third in La Liga. By contrast, Leicester are ninth in the Premier League following their incredible title winning campaign last season.
