Leeds United are interested in Atletico Madrid’s Matheus Cunha, and according to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Victor Orta has wanted him for years.
Indeed, an article penned by Graham Smyth claims that the Whites have been keen on Cunha for quite some time now, stating that the Brazilian has been near the top of Orta’s wish list for a long time.
The article states that Leeds would’ve stood a good chance of signing Cunha last summer if Marcelo Bielsa had greenlighted a move, but for one reason or another, nothing came of it.
However, now, with Jesse Marsch in charge, this interest could be reignited.
Marsch actually knows Cunha from his time as a coach at RB Leipzig, while Leeds’ attacking options have never been so thin, so a new striker is just what the doctor ordered.
Described as ‘extraordinary’ in the past, Cunha would certainly scratch the striking itch at Elland Road.
Yes, he’s had a bit of a rough time of it at Atletico Madrid – missing out on the Brazil squad at the World Cup due to his underwhelming form, but apparently, that hasn’t put Orta off the idea of signing the player.
Unfortunately for Leeds, this won’t be a straightforward race to win.
Wolves are making good progress on a double-deal that would see Cunha and his Madrid teammate, Felipe, head to Molineux, and even if Wolves do miss out, Arsenal are apparently also looking at Cunha as they look to continue their title charge in the absence of Gabriel Jesus.
The fact that Arsenal are keen on this player is a testament to his quality, but sadly, that’s a real blow to Leeds’ chances of landing the Brazilian.
It remains to be seen where Cunha ends up, but it sounds like he’ll be one to watch in the January transfer window.
