Marcus Antonsson promised much when he signed for Leeds United last summer but, after just one goal in 16 Championship games, his exit is inevitable.
You could hardly blame Marcus Antonsson for wanting to quit Leeds United. According to The Express, the Swedish striker is likely to leave Elland Road this summer after plummeting down the pecking order under Garry Monk.
And the 26-year-old’s impending exit is in stark contrast to the excitement that followed his £2 million arrival from Kalmar in his homeland last summer, as reported by The Express.
Antonsson was top scorer in the Swedish top flight when his move was confirmed and demonstrated those predatory instincts in a bright start to life in English football.
It may have taken him four games to get off the mark in the Championship, netting in the impressive 2-0 win at Sheffield Wednesday, but his incisive movement and speed of thought appeared to mark him down as one of the bargains of the season.
Forgotten man
As the season progressed, however, Anthonsson’s minutes dried up. Thanks in part to the electric form of Chris Wood, he has not started a league game since September’s 2-1 triumph over Blackburn Rovers.
As such, Antonsson spent most of the season stuck in the club’s Under-23s and it appears January’s ill-fated FA Cup fourth round humiliation at non-league Sutton United will be his final game in English football.
The 6ft striker now appears certain to bring an end to a forgettable stint with Leeds, The Express reporting that he will be axed just 12 months into the three-year deal he inked last summer.
Therefore, Antonsson will go down as another ill-fitting flop brought to the club during the tumultuous reign of madcap chairman Massimo Cellino. Hey, at least he scored more than Edgar Cani (below, left).
