Report: Leeds United transfer deal for Ortuno would save Leonesa more than £600,000

Leeds have been linked with helping out Cultural Leonesa.

Leeds United have been linked with a move to sign free agent striker Alfredo Ortuno, to loan out to Cultural Leonesa – reported last week by Diario de Leon.

An odd move perhaps, when 26-year-old journeyman Ortuno is a free agent and Leonesa could sign him anyway. But there is a particular reason why Leeds are getting involved.

This is because of a clause inserted into the terms of Ortuno’s release from Las Palmas earlier this season.

El Periodico de Yecla report Las Palmas ensured that if any other team in Spain’s Segunda Liga signed Ortuno, they would be due a compensation payment of 700,000 Euros (£617,000).

This would apply to Cultural Leonesa, and involving Leeds United is a practical workaround.

Leonesa are 99% owned by Qatar’s Aspire Academy, which is headed up by Leeds United director Ivan Bravo.

The two clubs worked together on a deal to sign Ouasim Bouy this summer, with Leeds signing the ex-Juventus man and then loaning him to the Spanish club.

Ortuno may never end up playing for Leeds, although they will at least have the option in the future should they choose to go ahead and sign the forward.
