According to The Athletic, Leeds United made a late inquiry about Blackburn Rovers’ Ben Brereton Diaz on Deadline Day.
The Whites were scrambling in the final hours of the transfer window as deals for both Cody Gakpo and Bamba Dieng fell through throughout the day, and with just hours to spare, they knocked on Blackburn’s door to ask about their star man.
Brereton Diaz is entering the final year of his Blackburn contract, so it makes sense for him to be seen as an attainable target, but unfortunately for Leeds, Rovers weren’t budging on their valuation.
Leeds weren’t the only club to fail to get over that hurdle on the day. Fulham also tried for the Chile international on Deadilne Day – making two bids for the ‘extraordinary’ attacker, but the Cottagers were unable to match Blackburn’s asking price.
Leeds were also less than impressed by what Blackburn wanted for Brereton Diaz, so their pursuit went no further than an inquiry.
The Yorkshire club had been linked with the striker throughout the summer window, but the attacker is now staying in Lancashire, at least until January.
The winter window will be Blackburn’s last chance to cash-in on the player before his contract expires, and if they’re not at least in the playoff hunt around that time, they could be tempted to sell.
There’s currently no suggestion that Brereton Diaz will sign a new deal with Blackburn, so a free transfer move next summer could also be on the horizon – and with both Leeds and Fulham keen, a Premier League move surely beckons for the talented 23-year-old.
For now though, Brereton Diaz remains in the second-tier, while Leeds went out and signed Wilfried Gnoto to fill their striker void on Deadline Day.
