La Liga high-flyers Eibar were hoping to beat Leeds United to the signing of Huesca forward Samu Saiz – but they appear to have accepted defeat.
Leeds United appear to be edging ever closer to their second signing of the transfer window.
And Polish playmaker Mateusz Klich could have a partner to share the creative burden next season. Because the agent of Huesca forward Samu Saiz told the Yorkshire Evening Post recently that there is ‘firm interest’ from Leeds in his client.
The problem facing the Championship side, however, is that the 26-year-old also had interest from Spain’s top tier.

Leeds United manager Thomas Christiansen
El Diario Vasco reported that La Liga high-flyers Eibar were close to signing Saiz before Leeds made their interest known. The plucky Basque side may be the smallest club in the history of the division but they continue to punch above their weight, defying expectation to finish in the top half in their third successive La Liga campaign.
Lower league journeymen like striker Sergi Enrich and talented left-back David Junca have also become established top tier stars at the 7,000 capacity Ipurura stadium.
However, it appears that they may have accepted defeat. Because Marca claim Eibar have turned their attention towards signing Mikel Vesga on loan from Basque neighbours Athletic Bilbao.
And this could leave Leeds free to bring in the former Spain Under-19 international Saiz.
Leeds United fans could have a new attacking star to cheer on
A natural ‘number 10’ Saiz has spent the majority of his career in the Spanish lower leagues, representing the B teams of Real Madrid, Atletico and Sevilla in a nomadic career. However, after hitting 12 goals and producing eight assists last season, a move to England beckons.
Saiz spent time at Sevilla while Leeds’ new director of football, Victor Orta, was part of the recruitment team at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan. And a reunion most certainly looks on the cards.
