According to The Athletic, Leeds United will try to move Kiko Casilla on this summer, and one way in which they could get him off the books is by paying off his contract.

The Spanish goalkeeper has just one year remaining on his Leeds United deal, but it’s very unlikely that he’ll be seeing out this season at Elland Road.

It’s fair to say that Casilla isn’t a fan favourite at Elland Road. He lost a lot of support amongst Leeds fans after he was found guilty of racially abusing Jonathan Leko back in 2019, while his poor performances on the pitch also saw him lose his spot as Leeds’ number one goalkeeper.

However, despite all of this, Casilla has on the books at Leeds, and for quite some time, he was a favourite of Marcelo Bielsa, with the Argentine describing the goalkeeper as ‘very influential’ during his time at the club.

Of course, Bielsa is gone now, and it seems as though Jesse Marsch won’t have any use for the Champions League-winning goalkeeper, so much so that he could actually be released by Leeds.

Casilla spent last season out on loan at Elche, and in an ideal world, Leeds would be able to sort out another loan or a permanent transfer for the Spaniard, but failing that, he could be allowed to leave on a free transfer after a payout.

Casilla was signed with plenty of fanfare back in January 2019, but he’s likely to be leaving the club without a fond farewell.

It remains to be seen where Casilla ends up next, but one thing seems almost certain, he won’t be playing for Leeds again.
