Giuseppe Bellusci was today reportedly no longer a Leeds United player, the Yorkshire Evening Post reported, but this has since been denied.

Bellusci did not report for pre-season with Leeds, and was sent on a season long loan to Serie A side Empoli days later.

The YEP reports that Leeds subsequently took the decision to cancel Bellusci’s contract by mutual consent, with the move coming to light now due to its registration with the FA being published.

However BBC Radio Leeds journalist Adam Pope suggested that the YEP jumped the gun and this is not actually the case.

Bellusci was one of the early signings at Leeds under Massimo Cellino, but was a divisive figure among fans.

He earned early plaudits by managing to get onto the scoresheet, but his defending was at times suspect, and got worse into his second season at the club, with the lowlights including a poor overhead kick clearance which he missed against Rotherham last season, and an own goal against Middlesbrough.

He was also involved with unseemly spats with supporters on social media, having failed to take criticism well.

At Empoli he has acquitted himself relatively well, but is the most booked player in Serie A this season.

It never seemed likely that Bellusci would return to Leeds after his loan spell came to an end, but for now it seems he does remain under contract.
