Tottenham Hotspur failed in a late approach on deadline day for striker Michy Batshuayi, the Evening Standard reported.
Belgian website DH reported Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino received a personal recommendation for Batshuayi through Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa.
Bielsa and Pochettino are close, with the Spurs manager playing under the Leeds boss at international level for Argentina.
Batshuayi likewise played under Bielsa, making his name at Marseille.
The Sun also reported Bielsa’s recommendation prompting Tottenham to make late enquiries over Batshuayi.
Chelsea eventually loaned Batshuayi to Crystal Palace, with the striker providing an assist after coming on to make his debut against Burnley at the weekend, Sky Sports reported.
The Blues spent £33 million to sign Batshuayi in 2016, but he has fallen out of favour, spending the first half of the season out on loan with Valencia.
DH‘s report added that Tottenham’s pursuit of Batshuayi failed because Chelsea were reluctant to strengthen a top four rival.
