According to Record, reported Leeds United target Edinson Cavani has agreed a three-year deal to join Portuguese giants Benfica.

The Uruguay international is a free agent after leaving Paris Saint-Germain.

Cavani, 33, is still one of the leading strikers in the world and newly-promoted Leeds United dreamed of having him lead the line in their Premier League campaign next term.

According to ESPN, the Whites made contact with Cavani over a move to Elland Road.

The latest reports from Portugal, however, say Marcelo Bielsa’s side are set to miss out.

Portuguese editorial Record claim that Cavani has agreed a three-year proposal from Benfica where he will link up with returning manager Jorge Jesus.

The report comes a day after Brazilian club Atletico MG made attempts to sign him (globo esporte).

Cavani evidently represents a remarkable free transfer signing. His former teammate Marquinhos rates him incredibly high, labelling him a genius to Goal.

The former Napoli man netted 138 times in 200 league games for PSG.

While Leeds will be disappointed they look set to miss out, Bielsa’s side can swiftly move on to other targets as they look to strengthen their squad this summer.

A report from AS last week claimed Leeds were keen on Espanyol’s Raul de Tomas, while the Mirror add that Stuttgart’s Nicolas Gonzalez is another potential option.
