According to the Daily Mail, Leeds United are one of a number of teams to have shown an interest in signing Manchester United’s Sam Johnstone – despite not having a manager.

The Whites saw Garry Monk resign from his position last month in a shock decision, and he has since moved on to take the reins with Championship rivals Middlesbrough.

Whilst owner Andrea Radrizzani is now focusing on the appointment of a new manager, he has already brought director of football Victor Orta to the club, meaning he may look for new signings even without a manager in place.

The Daily Mail report that Leeds are one of a number of clubs to have shown an interest in signing Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone ahead of a possible move this summer.

Johnstone, 24, has come up through the ranks with United, but has yet to even make his first-team debut for the Red Devils, having been sent out on loan to Scunthorpe, Walsall, Yeovil, Doncaster, hometown club Preston and, most recently, Aston Villa.

Johnstone endured a difficult start to life with Villa, but he eventually impressed under Steve Bruce, before returning to Old Trafford this summer to once again sit behind David De Gea and Sergio Romero in the pecking order.

It’s now suggested that United could be open to selling Johnstone for a fee of £5million, with Leeds – as well as Bristol City, Leicester City, Sunderland and Watford.

Leeds could be eyeing up Johnstone as a long-term successor for Robert Green, but whether they would be willing to invest £5million on one player remains to be seen.

Ultimately, Sunderland may be the club who possess the greatest threat here. The Black Cats have agreed to sell Jordan Pickford to Everton, and should be looking to reinvest their money in another young, English goalkeeper – and at £5million, Johnstone fits the bill, even if they are managerless too.
