One of Leeds United’s rivals in their alleged pursuit of Edinson Cavani will not be signing the Uruguayan striker, according to reports in Portugal.

Cavani is without a club after his Paris Saint-Germain contract expired at the end of last month.

ESPN Uruguay claimed earlier on Thursday that Leeds had made contact with the 33-year-old’s camp ‘within the last hours’, and that an offer could be on the cards.

Benfica are among the clubs linked with Cavani this summer and a move to the Eagles – who will play Champions League football again next season – looked appealing on paper.

But it is said to have been confirmed to Journal Record that Cavani will not be a Benfica player after all, and that the prolific frontman has ‘millionaire offers from other countries’.

The Portuguese publication had earlier reported that the Eagles’ offer ‘did not please’ Cavani, who earned €18.4m per year at PSG.

It remains to be seen whether or not Leeds – who will compete again at Premier League level next season – could still tempt the former Napoli star.

But having a club like Benfica out of way wouldn’t harm the Whites’ chances.
