According to a report from the Yorkshire Evening Post, Leeds have received a considerable boost ahead of the resumption of the Championship season with Gaetano Berardi and Matthew Pennington returning to training.

Both Berardi and Pennington have not played for the Whites since their opening day win over Bolton Wanderers, with the Swiss suffering a dislocated shoulder while the Everton loanee sustained an ankle injury in the 3-2 victory.

The pair have missed the Whites’ last six games in all competitions, but appear to be closing in on a return to Thomas Christiansen’s side with the Yorkshire Evening Post suggesting that they have now returned to training.

The news will undoubtedly hand the side an important boost as they look to maintain the momentum they built up heading into the break.

United go into this weekend’s clash with Burton Albion third in the Championship, having won three and drawn two of their opening five games.

The Yorkshire Evening Post do not suggest whether Pennington and Berardi will be in contention to feature against the Brewers at Elland Road – but they do point out that the expectation was the former to return to light training at this stage which would just hint that it may be too soon to expect Pennington back just yet.

But while having the pair back would be extremely beneficial, it would certainly be fair to suggest that they both face a battle trying to get back into the team when they are fit.

The defence have not conceded a league goal since that win over Bolton, and goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald has had very little to do in that time also, highlighting just how well the back four has done.
