The future looks bright for Joe Gelhardt as The Athletic report that Leeds United rate him highly and believe he has a big role to play at the club in the coming years.
Gelhardt, who joined Leeds from Wigan in 2020, burst onto the scene last season with a number of eye-catching performances. He has impressed at both senior and U23 level and is currently out on loan where he’ll hope to hone his craft even further.
The 20-year-old was also an integral part of Leeds’ survival campaign last season, scoring a crucial goal against Norwich and winning a late penalty against Wolves, which helped secure crucial points in the relegation battle.

Leeds have loaned him out to Sunderland for the second half of this season. Gelhardt has already made a positive impact for the Black Cats, scoring once and assisting once in his first six games for his new club.
Leeds have a brilliant track record of bringing young players through in recent years with the likes of Pascal Struijk and Crysencio Summerville becoming key players for the first-team
Gelhardt’s versatility is also a major asset, as he can play as a centre-forward, on the wing, or as a number 10. This ability to play in multiple positions is a quality that any manager would value, and Gelhardt’s development in these different roles could be crucial to his future at the club, especially as it’s unclear who will be managing Leeds next season.
Leeds’ CEO, Angus Kinnear has spoken highly of Gelhardt in the past, describing him as a player who has “huge potential”, so it’s clear that he has admirers in the boardroom.
Whether or not Gelhardt can live up to his potential remains to be seen, but he appears to be primed to become a key player for Leeds in the coming years.
