Leeds United reportedly offered £5 million in instalments for Liverpool’s Ryan Kent this summer.
Heading into the final days of the English transfer window, Ryan Kent looked to be edging closer to a permanent move to Leeds United, but The Sun on Sunday (11/8; page 59) reports that a switch to Elland Road was scuppered by what the Whites were willing to pay for the Liverpool youngster.
Kent’s future has been a talking point for much of the summer after an incredibly impressive loan spell at Rangers appeared to get his career back on track.
The Sun on Sunday (11/8; page 59) reports that Marcelo Bielsa and Steven Gerrard were two of the head coaches keen on signing the youngster, but they faced competition from Middlesbrough, Aston Villa and Blackburn Rovers for his signature.
Leeds seemed to be the side in the driving seat to land Kent, with Goal reporting earlier in the week that the two clubs were in talks over a potential move for the 22-year-old.
But The Sun on Sunday suggests that hopes of a deal were dashed when Leeds offered to pay £5 million in instalments, while the Champions League winners were looking for double that amount.
With the English window closed, it now appears that Rangers may be the favourites to sign Kent with the report noting that the Gers are still interested in re-signing the wide-man on loan this season.
Despite his promise, some Leeds fans will be pleased that Eddie Nketiah was the player that the Whites landed to bolster their attacking ranks before the deadline passed.
Kent appears to have the potential to make a devastating impact in the Championship. But Leeds needed a replacement for Kemar Roofe before the deadline, so signing a striker on loan rather than another winger looked to be a smarter move from Bielsa’s men.
