Leeds United have missed out on the signing of Hertha Berlin star Matheus Cunha, with Atletico Madrid set to clinch the signature for the attacker.
According to Gianluca Di Marzio, the Brazilian forward is ‘scheduled’ to meet the European giants this morning to complete the transfer to Atletico. Diego Simeone’s side will pay a reported €30m (£25m) for the 22-year-old talent.
Leeds has been linked with Cunha for a good chunk of the transfer window. Marcelo Bielsa had reportedly identified the Hertha star as an attacking option this summer.
However, the attacker’s performances in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics have attracted further interest.
Cunha was part of the Brazil side that won Gold in Japan. Cunha played a starring role for the South American nation in their run to winning the competition. And now it appears that Atletico have won the race for the forward.
With the transfer window closing soon, Leeds are running out of time to add an extra attacker to the squad. So far, the Yorkshire side have made just two signings for the first-team.
Indeed, Leeds have made a poor start to the season, conceding seven goals and collecting just one point via a home game against Everton.
And if Bielsa is to avoid second season syndrome which has taken so many sides from the Premier League back down to the Championship, the Argentine manager should be looking for an alternative to Cunha in the coming days.
