Report: Leeds keep Jordan Hugill on radar, but not convinced he’s an £8m player

Leeds United have reportedly kept Jordan Hugill on their radar, but are not prepared to meet his asking price.

According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Leeds are fans of Preston North End striker Jordan Hugill and have kept the striker on their radar, but are not entirely convinced that he would be worth the £8 million that their Championship rivals are keen to receive for his signature.

Goals from strikers has certainly been an issue for Thomas Christiansen’s side this term. After Chris Wood shouldered the overwhelming majority of the goalscoring burden last season, it is pleasing for the Whites that the goals have been more evenly distributed this year, with five players already bringing up five league strikes for the campaign.

However, Leeds have Gaetano Berardi to thank for their only goal in their last four games. And given that the right-back had not scored a professional goal before his stunning strike at Newport County in the FA Cup, it is obvious that they cannot rely on the cult-hero to make it a regular occurrence.

Signing a striker will be a phrase that is on the January wishlist for many of the Elland Road faithful, and given his form since the start of last season, Hugill is probably a player that many supporters would like to see targeted this month.

The 25-year-old scored 12 times in the league last season and is already on eight league goals for the campaign this time around, so it is not difficult to see why he appeals to the Leeds fans who have not seen Pierre-Michel Lasogga score since October or seen Caleb Ekuban – who has been injured for much of his time with the club, and, in fairness, looked very bright when given a chance – find the back of the net at all in the league.

However, it appears that a January move is highly unlikely at this point. The Yorkshire Evening Post reports that Leeds are fans of the Preston star and have been looking at him for a while, but the price is an issue.

According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, the Lilywhites – who are only two points off Leeds in the table – would want at least £8 million for Hugill, and the Whites are not convinced that he is worth that amount.

In fairness to Leeds, while his tally of 20 goals since the start of last season is impressive, it perhaps does not jump off the page quite as much as the club would like if they are going to spend an amount that would make him one of the more expensive signings in the club’s history.

But with the groundwork for a promotion push once again complete, Leeds fans may well argue that spending £8 million on a striker, in today’s game, will become one of their best pieces of business if he scores the goals that see them across the line this season.
