According to Transfer20, Leeds United have joined Premier League rivals Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign William Carvalho.

The Portugal international has been heavily linked with an exit from Real Betis.

Leicester have long had an interest in him, while Spurs boss Jose Mourinho also wanted the midfielder at previous clubs Chelsea (Mirror) and Manchester United (The Sun).

But the latest club to join the race for Carvalho is newly-promoted Leeds.

The Whites secured promotion back to the Premier League for the first time in 16 years after deservedly winning the Championship title this past season.

Marcelo Bielsa has transformed Leeds. Now, with extra backing in the summer transfer window, the Yorkshire club will set their sights on preserving their top-flight status.

Transfer20 claim Carvalho is a target for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

Carvalho, however, won’t force an exit from Betis and the arrival of new manager Manuel Pellegrini has made a difference with the player previously pushing for an exit.

The global health pandemic, though, has prompted financial strains on the club. It is said they have rejected bids for Carvalho from Leicester, but an offer of £22.5 million will suffice.

It remains to be seen how much Leeds are willing to spend this summer. But what can’t be doubted is the quality of Carvalho who won Euro 2016 with Portugal.

The holding midfielder is powerful, energetic and comfortable on the ball. At 28, he is approaching his prime and his attributes appear ideal for Premier League football.
