Report: Leeds hope to get rid of Felix Wiedwald this summer

It has been a miserable start to life at Leeds United for Felix Wiedwald, and the Whites are expected to admit defeat over his future.

According to a report from the Yorkshire Evening Post, Felix Wiedwald is one of the players that Leeds hope to shift off the club’s books at the end of the season as they look to trim down the squad.

Wiedwald was signed for £500,000 during the summer and it quickly became apparent that the plan was for the German to become Leeds’ number one despite the hugely impressive season enjoyed by Rob Green last year.

And while the 28-year-old’s campaign started with six clean sheets in his first seven games, there was always a reluctance to attribute too much credit to the goalkeeper given that he had had so little to do during that run. Unfortunately for Wiedwald however, the busier he was between the sticks, the more disappointing the summer deal turned out to be.

There have numerous mistakes which proved extremely costly and he only got a second spell as number one, after being initially dropped, due to the poor form that Andy Lonergan showed when he got a shot.

His most recent spell out of the side has seen Bailey Peacock-Farrell seize his chance with both hands, while Wiedwald has not been seen in a matchday squad since the defeat to Sheffield Wednesday in mid-March.

And now the Yorkshire Evening Post is reporting that there is currently no expectation for Wiedwald to remain at the club beyond the end of the season despite his deal having two years left to run.

Will Leeds shift Wiedwald?

It is all well and good Leeds having the plan to move Wiedwald on at the end of the season, but they must anticipate that it is not going to be easy to move the stopper off the club’s books on a permanent basis.

While there have been some bright performances, he has not exactly covered himself in glory this year and Leeds should perhaps brace themselves to take a loss on the summer signing as it would be a big surprise if any side was willing to offer the Whites the chance to make their money back.
