Leeds United have reportedly begun the process of looking into signing Matej Vydra from Derby County.

According to a report from the Yorkshire Evening Post, Leeds have already made contact with Derby over a potential move for Matej Vydra and the Whites are confident that a deal could be possible this summer.

The Elland Road faithful may have been taken aback somewhat by reports emerging from The Sun on Sunday (10/06; page 60) which suggested that Vydra was a £10 million target for Victor Orta after a stunning season where his 21 goals made him the Championship’s top goalscorer.

Leeds fans would be forgiven for being somewhat sceptical about the links given that a £10 million fee would make Vydra the club’s sixth most expensive signing ever. As transfermarkt shows, the £5.1 million spent on Adam Forshaw in January represents the only time that the club have spent more than £4.5 million on a player since 2002.

But the Yorkshire Evening Post is now suggesting that Leeds have already been in contact with the Rams about signing £10 million-rated Vydra, who is expected to leave Pride Park this summer.

And the Yorkshire Evening Post adds that Leeds believe that they could be able to get a deal done – but would not have the funds to sign both Vydra and Abel Hernandez, who has been at the top of the club’s wishlist since the start of the window and remains in discussions with Leeds.

Given how rarely Leeds have splashed the cash since their Premier League days, it would be a huge statement of intent from the Whites if they decided to meet Derby’s demands and pay the eight-figure fee required to bring the former West Brom and Watford ace to Elland Road.

But it certainly does appear that Leeds have begun the process of attempting to sign Vydra with the latest reports suggesting that contact has been made and that the Peacocks believe that they have a chance of bagging his signature.
