Bielsa has impressed as manager since taking over at Leeds this summer.
Mexican outlet Futebolatino have claimed that Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa has played a crucial part in Mexico’s imminent appointment of Tata Martino as manager – after Bielsa rejected the role himself.
Bielsa, 63, took over at Leeds before the start of pre-season in what is his first role in English football, but just a matter of weeks later the former Argentina and Chile boss had attracted Mexico.
But the Argentine, who spent 10 years in international management with Argentina and Chile, chose to turn down their advances and instead suggested they should hire Tata Martino.
Martino’s name may be recognisable to English fans, as he previously managed Barcelona during the 2013-14 season before taking over Argentina for two years between 2014 and 2016.
He then joined MLS side Atalanta United, where he has impressed as boss with 37 wins in just 71 matches. His contract is set to expire at the on New Year’s Eve this year.
Mexico are said to be close to an announcement and that is no small part down to Bielsa, who urged Mexico to hire the former Barcelona manager, finally ending Mexico’s hunt for a new boss since July 2018.
