According to the Daily Mail, Leeds United have opted against signing Newcastle United’s Matty Longstaff while Sheffield United are interested in the midfielder.

The Yorkshire-born player is out of contract at Newcastle this summer.

While fellow clubs would be forced to pay a compensation fee, Longstaff still represents a potential bargain with the energetic midfielder full of potential.

But despite his promise, Leeds reportedly aren’t following up on their interest.

A report last week by the Telegraph claimed Marcelo Bielsa’s side had joined the race to sign Longstaff, with the Whites keen to strengthen following their promotion.

But now, the Daily Mail claim the Whites have opted against a potential deal.

Leeds may have other targets in mind, with a centre-back and forward more pressing matters.

A report from AS last week claimed Leeds were keen on Espanyol’s Raul de Tomas, while the Mirror add that Stuttgart’s Nicolas Gonzalez is another potential option.

Longstaff, meanwhile, still seemingly has a strong suitor in Sheffield United.

The Blades will want to push on from their excellent Premier League campaign this past season. Chris Wilder’s side surprised most with a top ten finish.

Longstaff, born in Rotherham, may be tempted by a return to Yorkshire.

The 20-year-old managed nine Premier League appearances last season, scoring against Manchester United. Next season, he will be hoping for further playing time.
