According to The Sun (p61), Bristol City are leading the race to sign Burnley right back Tendayi Darikwa having failed with a January move.

The Robins have endured a torrid run of form of late, picking up just five points in the last ten Championship games, piling the pressure on manager Lee Johnson.

Saturday’s 3-3 draw at Derby County summed up Bristol City’s recent fortunes, as whilst they raced into a 3-0 lead, their defensive frailty saw them draw 3-3 at Pride Park.

Despite landing defender Bailey Wright from Preston North End in January, it seems that manager Johnson wants to add more defensive reinforcements in the summer.

Now, Sunday’s edition of The Sun (p61) claims that Bristol City are now leading the race to sign Burnley right back Tendayi Darikwa, who is keen on a summer move away from Turf Moor having struggled for first-team football.

The 25-year-old joined Burnley from Chesterfield back in the summer of 2015, and whilst he played 24 times last season, he has been unable to supplant Matthew Lowton as Sean Dyche’s first-choice right back, making just four appearances in all competitions – the last of which ironically came against Bristol City in January.

Darikwa is now believed to want first-team football, and City boss Johnson wants a reunion with him having played alongside the pacey full back at Chesterfield during the 2011-12 season.

A January bid allegedly failed, but Bristol City are now lining up a summer move for Darikwa, with right back Adam Matthews only on loan from Sunderland, and Darikwa seen as a long-term solution – though much could depend not only on Burnley’s asking price, but also Johnson’s future as Robins boss.
