Lee Charnley has been telling Newcastle United’s new owners to appoint Eddie Howe ever since they took over, the Daily Mail claim.
Newcastle look set to give Howe a two and a half year contract to take over from Steve Bruce, after talks in recent days.
Eddie Howe to Newcastle?
The Magpies initially went after Unai Emery, but after talks with the Spaniard fell through, they chased after Howe.
Newcastle have now finally reached a breakthrough and Charnley has been one of the 43-year-old manager’s biggest supporters.
The Mail claim that Newcastle’s previous ownership group were all big fans of Howe and if they had parted company with Bruce, he would have been who they picked to take charge.
It seems that PIF have had the same opinion and have listened to Charnley’s campaigning.
Howe could now be in the dugout for Newcastle’s game at the weekend against Brighton & Hove Albion, although it seems more likely he will be given a watching brief.
A good appointment?
In our view Howe could be a strong appointment for Newcastle, although he does arrive with a point to prove.
The doubts with Howe always emerge due to Bournemouth’s relegation from the Premier League.
However, the fact that he stabilised them in the top tier after taking them all the way up the divisions from League Two is often overlooked.
Howe, who was labelled ‘fantastic’ by Graham Potter just yesterday (Sussex Live), is still young in managerial terms and his coaching potential shouldn’t be overlooked.
Newcastle should certainly benefit from his appointment over the long-term, although time is against him.
The Magpies are still winless in the Premier League this term and sit six points from safety already.
