According to a report from the Northern Echo, both Lee Cattermole and Jack Rodwell are keen to leave Sunderland this summer with the latter attracting interest from Major League Soccer.

The Black Cats are licking their wounds after suffering their second relegation in as many years, but there appears to be a feeling of optimism that this fresh start may ultimately prove to be exactly what the club needs with new owners in place and a new manager in the dug-out.

And it would appear that some of the players associated with the bleak period that they now seem to be coming towards the end of are also considering their futures, with Northern Echo reporting that both Cattermole and Rodwell are looking to leave Sunderland this summer.

The Northern Echo adds that Rodwell could be offered the chance to head to America, while Cattermole is also keen to consider a fresh challenge after nearly a decade at the Stadium of Light.

While both players have the potential to be significantly better than most of the players in League One next season, it seems to be a wise move for the club to move the players on if they can find sides for them.

The Northern Echo reports that Cattermole is on a ‘Premier League’ contract, so clearing him and Rodwell off the wage bill could be an extremely smart decision as Jack Ross looks to develop this new, potentially exciting chapter for Sunderland to build from.
