Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with Gelson Martins.
According to Il Messaggero in Italy, Lazio have made an offer to free agent winger Gelson Martins in a bid to secure a major coup this summer.
Martins, 23, is one of seven players to have terminated their contracts with Sporting in a stunning row with the Portuguese giants, stemming from an attack by the club’s fans during a training session.
One player has already moved on, as Rui Patricio joined Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday, but the likes of Bruno Fernandes, William Carvalho, Bas Dost and winger Martins are now set to be inundated with offers.
Il Messaggero in Italy report that Lazio are making their first move for Martins, offering him a five-year deal worth €2million-a-year, which equates to around £35,000-a-week in wages.
Lazio may be selling winger Felipe Anderson to West Ham, and have identified Portugal international Martins as a potential replacement in what would be an ambitious move from the Rome-based side.
At £35,000-a-week though, Lazio’s offer could yet be usurped by Premier League clubs, with Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur surely not prepared to sit around and wait.
The Times recently claimed that Tottenham want to bring Martins to North London, with the Liverpool Echo noting that the Reds may be interested having viewed him as an alternative to Mohamed Salah last summer.
The two Premier League giants – both equipped with Champions League football next season – would surely be able to double Lazio’s offer for Martins, offering him a chance to play in the Premier League and in Europe’s top competition next season.
With blistering pace and an impressive record of 13 goals and 13 assists last season, Martins would be a spark for any team, and both Liverpool and Spurs should be preparing to beat Lazio’s offer and land a rare opportunity on a free transfer.
