The Tottenham Hotspur defender is reportedly wanted by Lazio.
According to Italian media outlet Corriere dello Spot, Serie A side Lazio are lining up a shock summer swoop for Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghen, as they look set to lose Stefan de Vrij on a free transfer.
The 30-year-old joined Spurs from Ajax in the summer of 2012, for a fee believed to be worth in the region of £12 million, and he has since gone on to establish himself as one of Mauricio Pochettino’s most important players.
Corriere dello Sport claim that Lazio have identified the Belgian as a key transfer target for the summer.
Surely Tottenham won’t sell Vertonghen, though
The Lilywhites would be mad to sell the 30-year-old centre-back, considering his obvious importance to the team
Toby Alderweireld’s future in north London is far from certain, and it is looking increasingly more likely that he will leave the club in the summer.
With this in mind, Spurs absolutely cannot afford to sanction Vertonghen’s departure, and the Tottenham hierarchy will surely do all they can to keep him at the club for the foreseeable future.
If Pochettino is to guide his side to a new era of success, he must keep his most important players at the club, and Vertonghen certainly qualifies in that category.
