Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has asked his board to sign Arsenal striker Pierre Emerick Aubameyang last January, according to the Athletic.
Aubameyang was considering leaving Arsenal at that stage, before he signed a new contract, and Lampard apparently felt that he could be an ideal addition for Chelsea.
However, the board didn’t grant his request – with Timo Werner eventually brought in over the summer to help the side improve up-front.
Werner has struggled for form since arriving at Chelsea, and his poor performances have actually contributed towards Lampard’s sacking.
Whether Aubameyang, who was once hailed as ‘world-class’ by Gary Neville (Sky), would have been a better option is very much up for debate, though.
The rapid forward has struggled for form at Arsenal this term and although he is far more proven at Premier League level than Werner, the German has actually outscored him this season, across all competitions.

The Athletic claim that Aubameyang’s arrival was one of a number of transfer requests which weren’t granted to Lampard during his time in charge at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea are now set to replace Lampard with Thomas Tuchel, as they seek to improve their form.
