The Ivorian defender had been linked with an exit from Sunderland throughout the summer.

Sunderland spent much of the summer trying desperately to keep hold of their defensive talent Lamine Kone.

The 27-year-old Ivory Coast international has thrived at Sunderland since his arrival from Lorient in the winter transfer window. He played a vital role at the club in their successful fight for survival in the Premier League last season and caught the eye of Everton.

At one point it even saw Kone not playing for Sunderland, as he attempted to force a move away from the Stadium of Light this summer.

But now it appears he is set to sign a new deal with the club, according to reports in France.

Foot Mercato are reporting that Kone has agreed to extend his contract with Sunderland after weeks of lengthy negotiations.

They claim he has increased his wages at the club and has agreed a deal to remain with the Black Cats until 2021.

This will be a big boost for Sunderland, for whom the future of Kone has been a major concern in recent weeks.

If he can help keep Sunderland in the Premier League again, it will be a deal well worth sorting.
