Liverpool have decided to let Nat Phillips leave the club – if his asking price is met, according to a report from The Athletic today.
The Reds have already signed Ibrahima Konate for £36 million this summer.
And with Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip likely to be fit for the start of next season, Phillips will be nowhere near as important for Liverpool as he was last term.
The towering centre-back produced a number of colossal displays in helping Jurgen Klopp’s side finish the campaign with a bang, winning five games in a row during May to clinch a Champions League spot.
But the player is interested in leaving and according to The Athletic, Klopp won’t stand in the player’s way – if a £15 million price-tag is met.
The report adds that the German manager is happy to keep Phillips on as a squad player due to his professionalism and attitude.
Bittersweet
Liverpool fans will love to see Van Dijk and Gomez back, not to mention new boy Konate.
But it is very much bittersweet in light of the fact that their return and arrival means that popular cult heroes like Phillips must suffer in terms of game time.
The Bolton-born 24-year-old will be lucky to play next season and that’s just being honest.
If the £15 million arrives, it makes sense for all parties for Phillips to go.
