Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp wanted to sign Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani in the summer of 2021, according to El Nacional.

What’s the story?

It has been reported that Liverpool manager Klopp monitored the situation of Cavani all summer.

However, United did not want to sell the Uruguay international striker to their bitter rivals.

The report in the Spanish news outlet has added that Cavani wanted to leave the Red Devils until the last day of the summer transfer window.

However, Cavani could not do so.

El Nacional are also reporting that Barcelona are interested in signing the 34-year-old now.

Xavi is the new Barcelona head coach, and he wants to bring in a pure number 9.

Bizarre claim

It is quite a bizarre claim from El Nacional.

Now, we do not doubt for a second Cavani’s quality, but we find it hard to imagine Klopp really thinking that he could sign the striker.

After all, we know the intense rivalry between Liverpool and United.

Moreover, Cavani is 34 now, and Liverpool do not tend to sign players of that age.

The striker – who earns £250,000 per week as salary, according to Spotracextended his contract at Old Trafford in May 2021.

Yes, United subsequently signed Cristiano Ronaldo, but they were simply not going to sell Cavani to Liverpool.

And Klopp would have known that.
