Loris Karius looks set to be the man sacrificed from Liverpool’s Champions League squad for the upcoming group-stage campaign this season.
The Reds are forced to axe one senior player from the selection for Europe’s elite competition.
This is because if Jurgen Klopp wants to include 18-year-old Harvey Elliott, which he undeniably will based on the youngster’s brilliant performances this season, then somebody has to be cut to adhere to UEFA regulations.
And The Liverpool Echo has reported that that man is going to be the German goalkeeper.
Karius failed to secure a move away from Anfield this past summer and with his contract set to expire next year, he is the most likely option to get chopped.
The fact that he’s also Liverpool’s fourth-choice goalkeeper, behind Alisson, Adrian and Caoimhin Kelleher also works against the former Mainz stopper.
Obvious choice
This is the obvious choice, it has to be said.
Karius has had virtually no future at Liverpool since his horror show against Real Madrid in the Champions League final back in 2018.
The 28-year-old conceded two howlers as the Spanish giants won 3-1.
Incidentally, that was also Karius’s last senior and competitive appearance for Liverpool and to make room for Elliott, it’s a no-brainer that Klopp should exclude him.
